CaligulaCaligula (1979)

IMDB rating: 4.60

Plot: The rise and fall of the notorious Roman Emperor Caligula, showing the violent methods that he employs to gain the throne, and the subsequent insanity of his reign – he gives his horse political office and humiliates and executes anyone who even slightly displeases him. He also sleeps with his sister, organises elaborate orgies and embarks on a fruitless invasion of England before meeting an appropriate end. There are various versions of the film, ranging from the heavily- truncated 90-minute version to the legendary 160-minute hardcore version which leaves nothing to the imagination (though the hardcore scenes were inserted later and do not involve the main cast members).

What do you think of the fact that both Caligula and Julius Caesar's death and circumstances were the same?
What do you think of the fact that both Caligula and Julius Caesar’s death and circumstances were almost the same?

I didn’t notice until now, but both of their deaths are very much alike.

Caligula was repeatedly stabbed by members of the senate that didn’t agree with his policies, as was Caesar. Caligula was murdered at an attempt to restore the republic, but the Romans never tried to bring it back again. Caesar was murdered to save the republic, but of course it was the exact opposite because it turned into an Empire.

If I’m wrong, correct me please.

Anyway, what do you think?

You are ’somehow mistaken’ – polite way of putting it, notice?

Caesar was killed by dissident senators. Gaius (I prefer to call him the emperor Gaius) was killed by his bodyguard, though others may have been in the plot.

Caesar’s killers killed him because they thought he was trying to make himself a king. Gaius’ killers, including their leader Cassius Chaerea, were just enraged at him because he mocked them in public.

In the confusion that followed the death of Gaius, the senate did suggest restoring the republic, but that was not the demand of his killers.

Not true.

Caesar was murdered by Senators who disliked his reform policies, which were costing them money and confiscating their lands, and because they had lost their traditional political power to Caesar. They claimed to be ’saving the Republic’ when their motives were more to do with preserving their own power and fortunes.

Caligula was murdered because he was mad – his excesses had reached the stage where no one felt safe at any time.Further, it wasn’t just Senators involved in the plot, the commander of the Praetorian Guard and members of Caligula’s circle also being involved. There was no plan to restore the Republic following Caligula’s murder – if the Praetorian Guard hadn’t have made Claudius emperor, there would have been a power struggle ending in the emergence of a new emperor anyway (as happened after the death of Nero in 68).

Caesar’s murder was for political and personal gain, Caligula’s could be represented as for self defence. Other than that they were both stabbed (in a pre firearm age) there are no real similarities.
