Am I getting old or what?
I’m 25, and remember when I graduated High School 4 years ago, growing up in the 90’s, etc. My generation still had a sense of "privacy".
People didn’t hand out phone numbers over the internet, bash their best friends on Facebook, talk candidly about EVERY LITTLE THING that went on in their lives, for THE ENTIRE WORLD. I remember when secrets were real, and telling them was wrong.
I also remember when I wanted to talk to my friends, I visited their house. Kids these days just text and chat away.
It also seems more slutty. Girls will wear next to nothing, and boys just let it hang where it falls. Television has NOTHING on it, except sex.
Even the gritty crime shows have sexual related topics. Even Vampires have fallen into this. They used to be either sad, romantic outcasts (Think Anne Rice) or creepy fiends (Dracula).
Now they are pathetic teen idols that cause girls to think stalking, emotional abuse, and neglect are "what real love is".
This generation also seems materialistic, wanting every new item that comes out, armed to the teeth with cell phones, iPods, laptops, Bluetooths, and the latest fashion; Emo.
Which, Emo is really a watered down Baby Bat version of Goth. You still see 30 year old Goths, but I bet no child today will be a 30 year old Emo.
I remember all the fruity, colorful stuff we had back in the 90’s. Now everything is Silver, White, Black, or Chrome Colored. Whatever happened to Lisa Frank?
The music is crap too. I haven’t heard one Top 40 song in the past 6 years that hasn’t used Auto Tune or Vocal Adjustments to create synthesized songs about Love, Love Lost, Love Found, Sex, Getting Laid, Getting Your Freak On, Love, Love Lost, Love Found, Getting Your Freak On.
That’s what every song out today is about. I’m sorry for the rant, I just feel old.
I know how you feel. I graduated HS in the 70s! I feel like a dinosaur! I remember when you had to give someone instructions how to get somewhere new?!?

I’m part of this generation, and I agree with you. It’s way more fake and cold than anything in the 90s… I’ll be part of a generation with such classics as ‘Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor’ etc .. hehe
You can see how the recession is affecting the quality of entertainment in the US for sure… with all the crap reality tv and crap music. I think we watch way more porn than any preceding generation as well.. ehe
I just find comfort in not being part of it, and I don’t really feel that I need to keep up with the stupid trends. I take whats good and leave the rest. I am always exploring pop culture of other decades/eras, so I’m an outsider, but it’s cool. I think what you’re experiencing is normal.. A lot of it is made for 14 year olds, so I don’t even really bother.
btw Emo is certainly not new. , , theres actually way more colours now with the popcore dorks and american apparel … graphic pattern clothing mimicking the 70s and 80s.. neon. electro music is getting pretty big again (just like the 90s) It’s all around the corner for you I guess? It will be sort of back soon. hehe
